Interior designer, carpenter or design-and-build in Sri Lanka?

Three ways to do a home interior in Sri Lanka, compared on upfront cost, who is responsible, who keeps the schedule and how closely the result matches the design.

Short answer: for a home interior in Sri Lanka, hire a carpenter directly for a single, simple piece you can describe clearly. Hire a designer if you want a plan and are happy to manage the build yourself. Choose a design-and-build company if you want one company responsible from drawings to installation, which suits whole rooms, apartments and houses with a lot of built-in furniture.

In Sri Lanka, much of the built-in furniture (wardrobes, pantry cupboards, kitchen cabinets, TV units) is made to measure. So the real question is not just “who designs it?” but “who designs it, who builds it, and who is responsible if the two don’t match?”

Option 1: Go straight to a carpenter

How it works: you explain what you want, the carpenter quotes and builds.

Works well when:

  • it’s one piece with simple, clear dimensions (a shelf, a basic wardrobe),
  • you already know exactly what you want,
  • you know the carpenter’s work.

Watch out for:

  • no drawings, so details are decided as the work goes,
  • material and hardware choices left to the carpenter (our guide to board materials and solid wood helps you ask the right questions),
  • nobody checking how the piece fits the rest of the room.

Option 2: Hire a designer, then your own builders

How it works: the designer delivers layouts, 3D views and drawings; you hire a carpenter, ceiling contractor, painter and electrician to carry them out.

Works well when:

  • you want a considered design and enjoy managing tradespeople,
  • you have builders you trust,
  • you have time to be on site regularly.

Watch out for:

  • drawings the carpenter interprets differently,
  • several contractors whose timelines depend on each other,
  • disputes over who caused a problem, with the designer and builder each pointing at the other.

Option 3: A design-and-build company

How it works: one company designs the interior and builds the furniture and joinery. Some, like turnkey companies, also handle ceilings, flooring, painting, lighting and styling.

Works well when:

  • you’re doing a whole home or several rooms,
  • you want one point of contact and one party responsible,
  • you want what you approved in 3D to be what is installed.

Watch out for:

  • one company’s workmanship for everything, so check its finished projects and reviews before you commit,
  • less price competition on the build, because you are not collecting competing quotes for the furniture,
  • a design that may be tied to that company: ask whether you can take the drawings to another builder, and whether the design fee is deducted if they build,
  • scope that varies between companies: some handle ceilings, painting, flooring and lighting, others only the furniture, so ask for an itemised quote that shows what is included.

Side-by-side

Carpenter only Designer + your builders Design-and-build
Plan and 3D before building Rarely Yes Yes
Upfront cost Usually the lowest quote, no design fee Design fee plus separate quotes from each trade Design fee (some companies deduct it if they build), then a quote for the build, based on the approved design
Freedom to compare build quotes Yes Yes Limited
Who is responsible for the result Carpenter for the build; you for the plan Split between several parties One company
Who keeps the schedule You You, across several trades The company
Your time coordinating Low for one piece, high for a home High Low
Risk the result isn’t what you expected Medium for one piece, higher for a home Higher Lower
Best for Single simple pieces Hands-on owners with trusted builders Whole rooms and homes

Is it cheaper to go straight to a carpenter?

For a single, simple piece, usually yes: the first quote is lower because there is no design fee. For whole rooms, that saving can disappear once changes start, because board that has already been cut and hours already worked are paid for by you. Settling sizes and materials in a design first usually costs less than changing them once cutting has started. Some companies also deduct the design fee if you go ahead with the build. Our guide to how much interior design costs in Sri Lanka explains how designers charge and what a complete design should include.

How to decide

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. How much built-in furniture is involved? One piece, a carpenter can be fine. Several rooms, you need a design.
  2. Do I want to manage the build myself? If yes, a designer plus your own builders. If not, design-and-build.
  3. Do I want the lowest first quote, or to know the full build cost from one party before anything is made? If the lowest first quote matters most, a carpenter, or a designer plus builders you compare, gives you more room to shop around. If you would rather have one party price the whole build from an approved design, choose design-and-build.

How we work at SM Interiors

SM Interiors is an interior design and furniture fabrication studio in Kelaniya, serving Colombo and suburbs, with around 90 residential and commercial projects completed since 2023. We work as a design-and-build company: we design the interior, show you 3D views before anything is made, make the furniture and joinery in-house to the approved drawings, and handle the finishes (false ceilings, flooring, painting, lighting, drapes, rugs and decor), with one point of contact throughout. For whole homes, see our turnkey interiors.

  • The design fee is deducted if you go ahead with the full job with us (design, fabrication and finishes). Furniture, fabrication and finishes are quoted separately, based on the approved design.
  • Our design isn’t tied to our build: it includes all the details a builder needs, so you can take it to other builders and compare prices.
  • Our furniture carries a 5-year warranty on its structure against manufacturing defects (surface finishes and hardware, such as hinges and drawer runners, are not covered).
  • Site visits are free across Colombo and suburbs. Elsewhere there is a visit charge, paid in advance and credited to the fabrication cost (not to design fees) if you go ahead with us building the furniture.
  • We also take on single custom furniture pieces.

Common questions

Is it cheaper to hire a carpenter directly instead of an interior designer?

The quoted price can be lower, but without a design you take on the planning, material choices and coordination yourself, and mistakes found after cutting are paid for by you. For a single simple piece a carpenter can be the right choice; for whole rooms, settling sizes and materials in a design first usually costs less than changing them once cutting has started.

What is a design-and-build interior company?

A company that both designs your interior and makes the furniture and joinery itself, so one party is responsible from drawings to installation.

Can I take a designer's drawings to my own carpenter?

Ask before you pay a design fee. Some designers hand over drawings you can use with any builder. Others expect to build what they design, or deduct the fee only if they do. Get the answer in writing.

Who is responsible if built-in furniture doesn't match the design?

With design-and-build, the same company is responsible for both. When the designer and carpenter are separate, responsibility can be unclear, so agree it in writing before work starts.
